PROTECTING THE FAITH OF THE FAITHFUL REQUIRES COURAGE – Bishop Badejo

Protecting the faith and spirituality of the children of God requires courage and firmness, the Catholic Bishop of Oyo Diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo has declared. He made the assertion in his homily at the recent Episcopal ordination and installation of Msgr. Francis Obafemi Adesina as the third Bishop of Ijebu-Ode Diocese.

Bishop Badejo who dwelt extensively on the readings of the day, also went down memory lane on the life of the Church in Ijebu-Ode Diocese. He advised the new bishop, priests, religious and lay faithful of the diocese to cooperate to consolidate on the foundations laid by the predecessors of the new Bishop, especially, the legacy bequeathed to the diocese by Most Rev. Albert Ayinde Fasina the immediate past local ordinary of the diocese.

Addressing the new Bishop, Most Rev. Badejo remarked: “My Lord Bishop Adesina, you have been called to be a good shepherd in the mould of the Master as we read in the Gospel. It is to be a model of many virtues. So shall it be by the help of the Holy Spirit.” He further remarked:  “Beyond correcting things, you will be required to inspire and empower the faithful in diverse ways, namely to bring Christian values to bear in the society in politics, economics and social relations.”

Other areas which the homilist drew the attention of the new bishop to included: “Bringing both the adults and youth to deeper knowledge of the faith in Catechism and in the Social Teachings of the Church”, noting that this however needs adequate planning, formation and collaboration with experts in various fields.

He urged the priests and religious of Ijebu-Ode Diocese to collaborate with their new local ordinary to counter the challenges of the present day for the divine ideals that the Catholic Church holds dear, as well as remain committed to the vows of their vocations.  He added: “With your cooperation with your new Bishop, the one who has called you will not fail you. This diocese will flourish and blossom as testimony to your fidelity and sacrifice”.

While commending the lay faithful for their immeasurable contributions to the growth of the Church and sustenance of Christian family life in the diocese, Bishop Badejo urged them to be more dedicated and committed in moving the diocese to the next level, by cooperating and collaborating with their new Bishop and priests in enhancing the spiritual and pastoral life of the Church in Ijebuland.

The ceremony which took place at the grounds of St Anthony’s Nursery and Primary School, Igbegba Road, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State; was attended by the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Antonio Filipazzi, Cardinals John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan of Abuja; Anthony Olubumi Okogie, emeritus of Lagos; and a high powered CBCN delegation led by its President, Most Rev. Augustine Akubeze. Also in attendance were dignitaries from all walks of life within and outside the country, including government officials, traditional rulers, captains of industries, priests and religious from all parts of the country, Knights of the Church and lay faithful.
