Archbishop Anthony J. V. Obinna, the Metropolitan of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province has reiterated the commitment of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria to make Veritas University (Catholic University of Nigeria), Abuja, the model of complete education and formation, where education, morals and commitment to service for the common good are imbedded into the lives of students of the university.

The Archbishop made this remarks in his address at the 10th anniversary and sixth Convocation ceremony of the university, held recently at the permanent site of the institution, Bwari, Abuja. According to him:“Veritas University was established to fulfill a need for a distinctly Catholic University which would not only provide quality education but would also provide Catholic formation as well as promote cultural heritage through teaching and research.”

Archbishop Obinna, who is the Pro-Chancellor of the university added: “Veritas University, Abuja (VUNA), is therefore positioned as an instrument for the protection of nature, human dignity, justice and peace, and economic and political values in Nigeria and globally.”

Expressing satisfaction that the university has made tremendous progress towards achieving this desired goal and objectives of the Bishops Conference, the owners of the university; Archbishop Obinna expressed gratitude to the  management, staff and students of the institution, since inception to date, for their resilience and perseverance in spite of the challenges encountered in the life span of the university.

Emphasizing that the commitment of the Bishop owners to the consistent Catholic philosophy of education, the Pro-Chancellor noted that the university was opened to a dynamic community of staff and students motivated by the ideals of hard work, integrity, discipline and creativeness, and dedicated to Catholic principles and attitudes working together to create knowledge for the advancement of the Nigerian society.

Archbishop Obinna outlined other areas of concern that are needed for the formation of an egalitarian Nigerian society which prompted the bishops to establish the university and called on the entire community of the institution not to relent in their efforts until the desires of the Bishop owners are realized as the apex Catholic University in the country.

While appreciating the dedication of the university community, he assured them of better conditions in the future as the institution moves towards greater heights. He noted: “The support we have enjoyed accounts for the many successes we have recorded within the past ten years; namely the final movement of the University to its permanent site, the expansion of the academic programmes in the university, the commencement of postgraduate studies, the establishment of the College of Theology and the Centre for Peace Development.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life, including some members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, the academia and members of family of the graduating students.
